From my Facebook page. If you stumble across this and would like to be FB friends just send me a request via FB. I'm in Bakersfield.
As most of you know I love horse racing. I even created a Facebook like page for those that like to follow the horses of Kentucky Derby age. This is one of my favorite race track personalities 95 year old John Shear. Every day he pops out of bed does sixty pushups and on racing days heads over to Santa Anita where he works at the paddock, walking ring, and provides security monitoring humans and beasts alike. Below are a couple of links telling the story of John saving the life of a five year old girl but getting trampled by a runaway horse himself. As you can see John survived the ordeal. The doctors told him immediately that surgery on a 90YO man to repair multiple broken ribs and internal injuries could be very dangerous. John told the doctors that he would not go under the knife; after a seven week hospital stay he was released to go home. He returned to his Santa Anita job, seven months after the accident, and he is still working today. John told Marlene and me, "Nobody has told me to go home, so I keep showing up."
